This paper is an essay that provides a literature review of two issues that revolve around smart
services and people’s perception on privacy.
a) Smart Services
The lives of virtually all individuals living in the contemporary society have been
revolutionized by the infiltration and proliferation of modern technology. Smart services are one
example of the most current innovations that has subsequently led to the improvement of the
quality of life (Smith 2015, p. 37). By definition, smart services are regarded as amenities that
have the potential of being utilized online so as to bring a new outcome within the economy. A
classic example of a smart service is where countries have continually taken up new payment
systems that allow people to pay for their bills online (Chigona et al 2012, p. 32). What’s more,
this form of modern technology also includes cyber related systems where most of the services
provided allow for the needs of a respective individual to be fulfilled.

Smart services have their fair share of benefits because they have managed to bring about
a paradigm shift in the technological world that has significantly changed most of the fields of
computer related applications (Ji-Young et al 2015, p. 429). Additionally, services that are
described as being smart are well known for replacing the conventional customer and provider

means that people can now access the internet and other online websites from any location such
as schools, homes, offices as well as shopping malls (Shin 2015, p. 919). Likewise, smart
services also allow people to use their credit cards and other forms of mobile payments to remit
cash for a given service. For instance, it has now become very simple to book for a flight ticket
online or reservation in a hotel through the use of smart services.
The end result of this innovation is the fact that people’s lives have been simplified and
the same time, the manner in which people play and work has also experienced positive
transformation (Wooyoung et al 2015, p. 183). The following part of the essay will discuss how
this smart services are connected to people’s privacy and the perception that comes with them.
b) People perception on privacy
It is indisputable that the introduction of smart services in the twenty first century has
brought with it a large share of benefits and advantages. At the same time, some risks and
demerits have also been reported as a consequence of this innovation (Rottondi et al 2015, p.
167). One of this bottlenecks is the fact that privacy has been compromised and people have their
own opinions and perceptions about it. It is a well-known fact that smart services heavily rely on
the internet to execute their function (Belanche et al 2015, p. 154). As such, people are required
to provide very personal details whenever they are conducting a transaction online. Hence, a
common perception among most people is the fact that their personal and financial privacy is at
risk. What’s more, other people feel that it is easy for their bank accounts to be hacked once a

skyrocketed since the introduction of smart services (Lodder and Wisman 2015, p. 22). At the
same time, hacking is also conducted on the accounts of individuals that own a profile on social
media. In fact, social networking sites such as Facebook, Twitter and Instagram are known to
provide a wealth of information about a given individual. Therefore, malicious people tend to
hack into this social media accounts so as to obtain additional information that can enable them
to further acquire details of smart card owners (Rottondi et al 2015, p. 167). At the same time,
people also perceive smart services as having brought about the rising cases of kidnappings and

This is because broadband services allow people to use and access internet from the
convenience of their homes. In the same way, it also allows spiteful and mischievous people to
hack into home computers so that they can monitor the movements of members within a given
household (Rottondi et al 2015, p. 167). Essentially, this means that privacy is compromised and
that most people do not feel safe logging into particular websites when they are in the house.
This privacy is also compromised by the fact that some home owners and individuals provide too
much information on their profiles and accounts on social media sites (Ji-Young et al 2015, p.
429). This in turn provides a leeway that the attackers can use to invade on their normal lives
leading to people becoming unsafe in their own circles (Ji-Young et al 2015, p. 429).
Therefore, people should understand that in as much as smart services have transformed
life and living for the better, it has still left behind a loophole that makes privacy quite
questionable. The best way that people can maintain privacy of their online transactions and
activities is by revealing less information online as this will ensure smart services remain safe
and reliable in the long run.
