Apollo 13 is a 1995 film directed by Ron Howard and produced by Universal Pictures. The movie narrates the predicament of the three astronauts on the ill-fated Apollo 13 on a lunar mission. The historical event had a significant impact on the reputation of Nasa because of the endangered life of the three astronauts after the explosion of the oxygen tank damaged the vital systems of the spaceship.Basic Information of Apollo 13 Film Research Paper. Starring Tom Hanks as Jim Lovell, Bill Paxton as Fred Haise, and Kevin Bacon as Jack Swigert the adventure film explores the themes of politics, technology, and problem solution. Summary of the Movie

The film commences on July 20, 1969, at Jim Lovell’s home where the families of the NASA astronauts gather to watch the Apollo 11’sastronauts walk on the moon. Several months later, Jim and his crewmembers are sent on a mission on the Apollo 13. The crew attends a press conference where they explain to the public the significance of letter 13 on their mission where the space shift will orbit the moon on April 13th launch at 1300hours and 13 minutes.Basic Information of Apollo 13 Film Research Paper. Although Marilyn states her misgiving about the flight, Jim reassures her of his optimism. A few days before the mission, the crew discovers that the flight backup has measles and Ken is at risk of infection. Jim is given the option of replacing Ken or postponing the flight and he chooses to replace Ken. The crew trains on simulators and on the launch day, Ken, Marilyn, and Haise’s wife watch from a distance as the rocket takes off.

After a successful dock on the Command Module Lunar Excursion Module, the crewmembers send video broadcasts though none of the networks carries the transmission. Afterward, they conduct a housekeeping procedure on the ship where Jim stirs the oxygen tank resulting in a loud explosion and the ship loses control as the system buttons light up. Mission control tries to solve the problem from the ground and secures the LEM while establishing ways of bringing the crew back home. As they pass around the moon, the astronauts see a landing site below them but are compelled to go back home. Basic Information of Apollo 13 Film Research Paper. The men controlling the ship on the ground discovered that the remaining power can only last for 45 hours and therefore the crew needs to shut all power-consuming controls. Ken figures that he can minimize procedures and land the men back safely. Despite the suspense associated with the challenges in saving the crew, they successfully land crew back on earth.

Historical Event 1-politics

In 1958, Dwight Eisenhower established the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA). President Kennedy inspired the American space program that saw the United States embark on a mission to the moon. However, in 1961 Yuri Garin a Soviet cosmonaut became the first man to land on the moon. Similarly, due to the rivalry triggered by the cold war, the United States could not sit and watch as their rivals made space discoveries. Basic Information of Apollo 13 Film Research Paper.President Kennedy compelled NASA to send a man to the moon by providing billions of dollars to support the mission (Tunzelmann, 2014). Therefore, the move to land Apollo 13 on the moon was a political initiative of enhancing the supremacy of the United States.

Historical Event 2

The Apollo 13 escapade highlights the technological and astronomical advances in the history of science. As a result, the United States embarked on more research until it landed Neil Armstrong on the moon in 199 during the Apollo II mission (Tunzelmann, 2014). Through the errors made on the Apollo 13, scientists and astronauts have made technological advances to avoid a repeat of a similar fault. Ebert (1995) asserts that the United States has technologically advanced in the space program by creating sophisticated equipment that look like tin cans. A sentence in the concluding narration highlights the extraordinary achievements in the space program.Basic Information of Apollo 13 Film Research Paper.

Historical Event 3-Creativity as a cognitive style

The film serves as a history lesson on the significance of cognitive leadership and creativity in solving problems. Commander Jim accepts the predicament facing his crew and seeks for ways of steering the ship back to earth (Yoder, N.D.). Although the film highlights the numerous challenges that the crew faced, NASA’s leadership was prepared in case of such an occurrence and the situation was less chaotic.

Critique

Apollo 13 is a film that highlights the strategies that NASA must devise to land a spacecraft that malfunctioned safely to earth. Although the movie triggers tension and excitement among the viewers, some of the scenes were not set on the moon. The film presents numerous realities that enhance its success. Basic Information of Apollo 13 Film Research Paper. For example, the supporting details describe the inability of Mattingly to fly the craft due to measles infection. Similarly, the accurate landing space on the Pacific Ocean and expressions of the astronauts during the flight enhances the suspense and drama in the film. The creators of Apollo 13 successfully presented the historical events that contributed to the hurried launch of the spacecraft. The movie has convincing rocket scenes, rousing music, and reality scenes that enhance the attention of the viewers. Therefore, the film accomplishes its role in depicting the history of the United States.

The film is directed single mindedly to draw the attention of the viewers to details. The filming looks like it was done in the outer space, therefore enhancing the reality of the movie. Evidently, details like astronauts boarding the ship, oxygen supply vent, and floating tape recorder are similar to those of the documentary, hence making the film look real.Basic Information of Apollo 13 Film Research Paper.
