As a professional counselor, the first affirmative action during counseling is attaining a rapport with the patient/student. Achieving a rapport with the patient requires the application of various strategies such as first talking about yourself (the counselor) (Feldman et al., 2016). By talking about self, the patient/client can humanize the counselor. This helps the client to view the counselor as a person rather than a professional who implicates an end to a means. In the first session, I’ll introduce myself to my client tell him where I grew up, how I came to encounter the prospects of education, and finally how I ended up in my career. The information that I will portray to the student will not only be professional but personal as I will tell him about all the challenges that I faced before achieving my dreams.

Question Two

Many college students are prone to rudeness because of the developmental stage that they are in. Since most college students are in their adolescent stage, they tend to be more apprehensive and prone to anger (Zubernis, McCoy & Snyder, 2011). Consequently, it is important that a counselor refrains from asking questions that might seem offensive to the intended or questions that might cause some form of rebellion.

Questions are an important inquest towards a person’s perception. By posing the question, a counselor can deduce answers whether they are answered or unanswered. In counseling, answers may be presented in both verbal or non-verbal manners (Williams & Butler, 2010). Questions consequently play a fundamental role in counseling.  The first question I would ask the client would be personal. For instance, I would inquire why the student chose that particular course as well as other factors that led him to pursue the course in question. Another appropriate question would be to ask the student which units/course he finds most enjoyable in the current semester. Alternatively, I would also gain a lot of information by asking the student on what activities that intrigued him mostly during the semester. Such questions would trigger the client to recall many memories that contributed to his/her academic life. More so, asking the student to reiterate his life before and after his parents decided to get a divorce would be a viable source of information. Requesting the patient to talk about before and after his parents decided to divorce would paint a better picture. As mentioned earlier these questions should be open-ended so that I can have the opportunity to make my personal opinion towards the student’s general understanding of the situation. Question Three

Active listening would play a big role in resolving the students’ academic issues. The use of supportive skills will ensure the student that I am fully aware of their situation. Further, the use of supportive skills will go a long way in convincing the students that I want to help. In the counseling session, the distance between the student and I will be minimal, and there won’t be a table between us. Such a measure helps the patient understand that there aren’t any barriers between them and the psychologist. Counseling Approach- Discussion Assignment.I will sit in a posture that will portray openness to information so that the student doesn’t find it difficult to give out important information.  Lastly, in the entire period that the conversation will take place, I will maintain eye contact with the patient to assure the patient that I am fully invested in his woes.

Question Four

The methodologies and approaches that I used in the previous patient wouldn’t significantly change as both patients share a common problem. The woman is in the process of divorcing her husband of 15 years while the 21-year-old student is battling with his parents’ divorce. The use of confrontational skills would best suit this scenario as more issues would be resolved.Counseling Approach- Discussion Assignment.

By deploying confrontational skills, I would have the ability to help the lady best understand her situation. For instance, asking questions such as “why do you think you want to divorce your husband of 15 years?” or “what were/are the pros and cons of your marriage?”, Would help me establish a baseline as to why the patients are seeking a divorce. The purpose of my counseling session would be to inquire from the patient whether they are convinced that divorce is the final option.

Since the woman has poor peer relations as well as a high rate of distractibility, I would have to be more creative to attract her attention to the ongoing counseling session. For instance, the use of humor from time to time would help in reducing the distractions that may arise amidst the conversation. Humor would also help make the conversation more interesting as well as indulge the patient sharing more intimate things about her life. Finally reducing the distance between the patient and myself would help in creating a more personal relationship (Vincent, 2016). The room setting would create an illusion that I am willing and able to listen to the patient rumble about their life without any interjections.Counseling Approach- Discussion Assignment.
