Stress in Psychological Context: Research Paper.

Stress occurs when a person identifies and reacts to actions considered as devastating or intimidating to one’s wellness. Coping denotes rational and interactive efforts that we experience related to stress. There are survival strategies to handle stress, and they include problem-focused coping, avoidance coping and emotion-focused coping. The paper talks about the level of my student stress scale list my top three major life stressors. Stress in Psychological Context: Research Paper. It also lists my top five great daily hassles from the greatest to the least. The paper further illustrates which coping skills I mostly associate with and it also explains the coping mechanism(s) that I find to be effective when dealing with my stressors.

Stress

In a psychological context, stress is when a person identifies and reacts to events appraised as devastating or intimidating to one’s wellness. Coping denotes rational and interactive efforts that we experience related to stress. Emotion-Focused Coping

This type of coping involves trying to minimize negative emotional responses related to stress. Such negative emotional responses include frustration, anxiety, depression, fear, embarrassment among others. When the foundation of stress is past a person’s control, emotion-focused coping is the best coping option. Techniques used in emotion-focused coping include meditation, emotional disclosure, and distraction.

Problem-Focused Coping

In this type of coping, an individual may attempt to manage the problem that is causing one to have stress. It typically includes recognizing a problem, discovering probable solutions, evaluating the benefits and costs of the identified resolutions and then choosing an alternative. Strategies used under problem-focused coping to remove the cause of stress include managing time, obtaining instrumental social support and solving problems.Stress in Psychological Context: Research Paper.

Avoidance Coping

This is a type of coping mechanism, which involves altering our behaviors, feelings or thoughts to prevent or minimize stress. It creates anxiety and stress, and it ravages self-confidence among individuals. Some coping avoidance techniques include attempting to avoid certain thoughts, conversations or feelings about a particular event. This technique has been notably a popular one amongst people who suffer from depression.

Research Article

“A study of stress among students of professional colleges from an urban area India” is a research article which talks about stress (Waghachavare et al., 2013). The objectives of the research were to evaluate stress amongst learners of different specialized colleges and its relationship with various factors. The technique used was a convenience sampling technique and 1200 students undertaking dental, engineering and medical courses were sampled, and data was collected using questionnaires.Stress in Psychological Context: Research Paper.

The results obtained indicated that out of the 1200 respondents, close to 25% experienced stress. Among the students who experienced , 27%, 34%, 39% were engineering, medical and dental students. These findings indicated that students are exposed to stress, and one of the most vital stressors are academic factors. The research concluded that the introduction of stress management education needs to be introduced.

Student Stress Scale

When I undertook my test on the stress scale, I obtained a score of 145. This translates to having about a 30% probability of having a severe health alteration. Change in the well-being of a relative, a heated dispute with a close acquaintance and altering my sleeping pattern were the three main life stressors that I am presently undergoing.Stress in Psychological Context: Research Paper.

Daily Life Hassles

Daily life hassles can be described as major or minor stressful life events that arise in our day-to-day activities. My five most frequent daily life hassles (from greatest to least) include;

  • My phone battery dying
  • Lacking sleep
  • Having to wait on a long queue
  • Losing an important document
  • Being with someone who does not keep time

Positive and Negative Skills Inventory

After analyzing both the positive and negative skills inventory, my findings indicated that positive responses outnumbered the negative ones. This shows how I always depend more on positive surviving abilities while handling with my anxiety issues. It is vital for one to always be aware of the stressors in the immediate environment. By being able to recognize them, they can plan on how to deal with them in more effective manner that will help them overcome them. In spite of the challenges one faces in coming with the positive skills inventory, the negative skills inventory also helps one become tougher and more resilient.

The coping mechanisms that I mostly utilize when dealing with stress are emotion-focused coping and problem-focused coping. When I am in situations that I believe I am powerless, I usually engage in emotion-focused coping. When I realize I am unable to handle a particular matter, I always recognize the hopelessness of the situation, and I distract myself with something else to take my mind off the situation. I usually engage in problem-focused coping when I find myself in situations where I know I can be actively involved in figuring out how to address the prevailing situation.
