Literature Review
The Millennium Development Goal 3 and the U. N Security Council Resolution
underscore the important responsibility of “women towards development and poverty reduction,
in the resolutions and prevention of conflicts as well as in peace – building” (Fischer-Tahir 1381). As a signatory to the Convention on the Elimination of all classes of Discrimination
against Women (CEDAW) and the International Convention on Civil and Political Rights (ICCPR) the Iraqi government recognizes the empowerment of women as a urgent and is devoted to improving women rights and gender equality (Ariany 537).
However, gender – based violence remains as a critical factor that inhibit women’s full social, economic and political participation. Honor killings, human trafficking and domestic violence remain a key threat to many women and girls in Iraq because of the complex connection of misconception in traditional and cultural beliefs. Second, gender – based favoritism in education is both an outcome and a cause of poverty and leads to a breakdown of economic and social development. The ratio of women to men in Iraq is 0.94 in elementary school and 0.85 in high school (Ariany 530). These data justifies to the levels of inequalities in education between the two genders at each stage. Finally, Iraq has registered significant progress when it comes to maternal health with the section of births supervised by skilled personnel jumping up to 90.9 percent in 2012 from 72 percent in 2000 (Fischer-Tahir 1381). Notwithstanding this

Research Plan
The research will employ both quantitative and qualitative research techniques to gather information. Particularly, the study will use non – experimental research design characterized with multistage sampling. From this, the researcher will use stratified sampling to identify and select 300 Iraqi women. The researcher will randomly administer questionnaires to the selected respondents. In addition, the researcher will employ interviews where there is need to acquire in –depth feelings from the participants. Finally, the researcher will use Statistical Package for Social Science (SPSS) to analyze the data collected because it is faster and easier to use the technique to analyze and compute data. Conclusion
In brief, women rights in Iraq are at critical levels. Falsified perceptions coupled in
traditions and cultural beliefs have been used to undermine the position of women the society.
Due to gender – based discrimination, Iraqi women are unable to engage effectively in economic and poverty reduction activities. Although the Iraqi government has ratified a number of international conventions that seek to curb abuse of women rights, the levels of abuse remain relatively high.
